The race for California governor is picking up. Leading Democratic candidates took part in a forum in Los Angeles over the weekend, trying to set themselves apart from one another. At the same time, campaigns for the Nov. 4 special election over redistricting has hit a fundraising milestone as ballots are about to be mailed out. All of this as California congressmembers face a looming government shutdown in Washington D.C. Blake Jones is co-author of POLITICO’s California Playbook and joins Insight with the latest in politics.

The nights are also getting longer, which offers stargazers the opportunities to take in celestial wonders like meteor showers or a view of the planets. A unique facility in El Dorado County is giving people the chance to capture these extraordinary sights every weekend for free. We revisit a conversation with Randy Hodges, the chief docent of the Community Observatory near Placerville, which is preparing to participate in NASA's International Observe the Moon Night event this Saturday.
Nevada County ‘Food Fight’
A Nevada County nonprofit is hosting a culinary battle this weekend, raising awareness around the movement to build a sustainable and resilient food system. Sierra Harvest's inaugural Food Fight Culinary Challenge & Art Show will take place this Friday, and see eight chefs compete for the title using only 100% locally-sourced foods. Sierra Harvest Executive Director Eli Bacon and two competitors, Blake Bichsel of Water and Air Catering and Executive Chef Alan Gosker from Lola Dining at the National Hotel in Nevada City, join us ahead of the event.
